Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) is a Spanish public university located in the City University of Madrid and Somosaguas campus in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Spain).

History:

The origins of the Complutense University found Cisneriana University of Alcalá de Henares. After languishing during the eighteenth century, by Royal Order of the Queen Regent of October 29, 1836, was ordered its closure until it re-opened its doors in 1977. Studies of the former University of Alcala moved to Madrid, which served for the foundation of the Literary University of Madrid, Central University and soon after more than a century later it began its operation, receive the name of Universidad Complutense Madrid. The Royal Order was issued following the resolution of the Senate Alcalá Alcalá leaving and moving to Madrid, hence the Madrid university hold titles and privileges of the old institution Alcala. The University is ranked first in the old Seminary of Nobles, and then in the convent of the Salesian News. Between 1840 and 1843 funds were transferred from the library Alcala. In 1843 he moved into a building on the street sold off-the former novitiate novitiate of the Jesuits, where he stayed for nearly a century.
The new University of Madrid intended to be a model that would break with the old structures. Bordering Cisneriana tradition, this would be the so-called Madrid for over a hundred years 'Universidad Central', then weighted according to the French centralized model. Would revolve around her the rest of Spanish universities, for which should serve as an example. It is well endowed in the capital of Spain from a university from which lacked. Since the law Moyano (1857) the university was the only one allowed in Spain to give the title of doctor, until 1954, was granted this authority to the University of Salamanca, following the conclusion of its seventh anniversary, and then the rest of Spanish universities of the time.
In 1927 he proposed the construction of a university quarter Ciudad Universitaria at Moncloa, on land donated by King Alfonso XIII to this end, formerly known as "The wasteland" or "high Moncloa." During this stage was the nucleus of the so-called Silver Age of Spanish culture. Teachers taught in their classrooms, among others, José Ortega y Gasset, Manuel García Morente, Luis Jimenez de Asua, Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Blas Cabrera.

The Civil War turned the City University of Madrid in front of battle, causing the destruction of buildings of colleges and institutes located in its premises as well as the loss of part of its rich scientific heritage, arts and literature, partly from the former City University Complutense. Was also lost, mostly for having exiled, a good part of the prestigious teachers who until then had taught at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
By 1954 the other universities in Spain, beginning with the Salamanca, regain the ability to issue doctoral degrees and Madrid loses the name of Central University, to be renamed in an informal "Complutense de Madrid." In 1970 the Government undertakes reform plans of Higher Education and the university was divided into two: the teaching of experimental sciences, health sciences, social sciences and humanities were grouped at the Complutense University of Madrid, while high schools technical education, as well as others that were attached to other agencies like the Army or the Ministry of Industry were grouped at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Then also created Somosaguas campus to house the bulk of the faculties of Social Sciences, thereby achieving alienating political and economic future of the reactions against the Franco regime which occurred on the main campus of University City.
Its activities are divided into two campuses, the University City, located in the Moncloa district and shares with the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, and the Somosaguas, in the town of Pozuelo de Alarcón.
