During the forties and fifties, Madrid was thirteen annexing neighboring municipalities (in 1947, Chamartin de la Rosa, in 1948, Carabanchel Carabanchel Alto and Bajo, in 1949, Madrid Barajas, Hortaleza, Canillas, Canillejas and Aravaca; in 1950 Vicálvaro, Fuencarral, Vallecas and El Pardo, in 1954, Villaverde), through its extension of 66 km ² to 607 km ² today. The Management Plan for the Metropolitan Area, approved in 1963, started the trend to divert the concentration of population from Madrid to metropolitan municipalities, as Alcorcón, Alcobendas, Coslada, Fuenlabrada, Getafe, Leganés, Móstoles, San Sebastian de los Reyes or San Fernando Henares.
