The History Museum of Madrid, former Municipal Museum, is located in the Centro district, Fuencarral street. Real occupies the building of the Hospice of San Fernando, built by architect Pedro de Ribera Baroque style. History:
In 1673 it founded the Royal Hospice of Ave Maria and San Fernando. Of the original building only the chapel remains, since it was renovated in the eighteenth century.
In 1919, the group declared a historic artistic monument through the intervention of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the Spanish Society of Friends of Art, which allows preservation of the threat of ruin.
In 1926 the company organized, with great success, the Exhibition of Old Madrid, the City Council restored the building to the occasion. As a result, we decided to create the Municipal Museum, was inaugurated on June 10, 1929.
In 2002 work began on the comprehensive rehabilitation of the building, respect for aligning features with relevance to the modern museum standards in order to improve the visitor's attention. Therefore, currently (2010) is closed.
The museum is designed as a complete journey through the history of Madrid since he was declared the capital of Spain in the sixteenth century. The municipal libraries before this time are exhibited in the Museum of San Isidro, also called the Origins Museum, located next to the Church of St Andrew and the Bishop's chapel, in the Madrid de los Austrias.
The History Museum's collections are characterized by a variety of types and themes. Very notable are the paintings, sculptures, furniture, fans, maps, models, china and silverware.
