El Museo del Ferrocarril de Madrid, Spain, is dedicated to the safekeeping and study of the railway in Spain from its origins to the present. Is managed by the Spanish Railway Foundation and sponsored by ADIF, RENFE and the Community of Madrid. It occupies the old station of Delicias.
History:
In 1930, the various railway companies that existed in Spain began to collect objects related to locomotives and rail. This work was interrupted in 1936 because of the Spanish civil war.
In 1948 to 100 years on the first railroad peninsula, from Barcelona to Mataro, a commemorative exhibition was organized that brought together various objects and locomotives, and began to show interest in the creation of a railway museum. In 1964, to celebrate the centenary of the lines from Madrid to Zaragoza and Madrid to Irun, Train began studying the idea.
Thus, in 1967 opened the first museum in Spain dedicated to rail. He was in the Palace of Fernán Núñez de Madrid (current home of the Spanish Railway Foundation). Distributed among four rooms, housed models, prints and small objects related to history and railway operations. He remained there until 1983, when he moved to Madrid Delicias Station closed to rail service since 1971 (in 1969 had removed the passenger traffic). This new space allowed to expand the museum's collection, including how to train new real exposure in the vast central nave of the season.
Because of the storm of September 10, 2008, the Delicias station suffered roof damage and several interior rooms. As a precaution, we decided to close the museum on a temporary basis while performing technical studies on the status of the building. During the last closure, the activity at the National Museum of Science and Technology, as well as in the Mini-Train (Train de las Delicias) and the Association of Friends of the Madrid railway continued as normal. It is currently open.
